how do i repair electric Dog Fence?
lightning struck within 25 feet of my friends underground Electric Dog fencing.The fencing no longer works.what is the procedure to repair.Is there a way of checking continuity of the underground wire?
There are two possible problems with the system following a lightning strike:
(1) The transmitter box (the box the wire is connected to) got fried by the lightning running up the wire. To test if this happened, try and turn on the dog fence transmitter box and see if it powers on. If it does not power on, check if it has a fuse you can replace. If there is no fuse, you probably need to replace the box.
If it does power on then it will sound an alarm and flash red (or something similar) if there is a break in the underground wire. (i.e. there is no longer continuity)
(2) If there is a break in the underground wire, you need to buy an RF-choke from Radio Shack (don’t worry it cost only a dollar or two). You will connect it to your system. The RF-Choke makes the underground wire emit a throbbing sound that you can hear on an AM radio.
You take an AM radio and wander around your friend’s yard looking for the spot where the underground wire is making only a weak throbbing sound. That is where you will find the break!

PS – once you have fixed the system, invest in a lightning protection module. (e.g. innotek LP-4100) For about $50 it will protect you from any future strikes.
