What situations call for an electric collar in training? Who should use these collars?

I’ve never had any experience with electric collars, so just asking the dog community what they know.

In what training situations should they be used?
Should only experienced trainers use them or should average pet owners be taught how they work/how to use them as well?
If you have used one…what issue were you addressing? Why did you choose an electric collar? And what were the results?

They should only be used by those who know how to properly use them. I have seen “experienced” trainers use them improperly and know average pet owners who use them correctly.

As for the situations they should be used in, most any situation that requires remote correction. They aren’t to be used to train the dog the command, only to correct the dog for a failing to respond to a command it already knows. In other words you have to teach the dog to come (for example) first then once the dog knows the command if the dog ignores the command or is to slow to respond use the collar to issue a correction. It can also be used to correct undesirable behavior if it requires a remote correction.

I have used the collar successfully both for proofing commands and to correct undesirable behavior (jumping) both with very successful results. I chose the e-collar because it was the proper tool for the job at hand.
