He has no idea how to toilet train the dog, he regularly forgets dog food so tries to feed it peanut butter and can’t decide on a name (which I’m sure makes the training more difficult). After a few days, he decides that he is not the right person to own a dog but can’t return it back to the store. When an opportunity emerges to sell it to spoilt brat Jules ( Mena Suvari ), who instantly gets on his nerves, he realises that the dog is actually the only thing in his life that he cares about and refuses to part with him. An incident at a dog park introduces Solo to Lola ( Lynn Collins ), a down to earth stripper. The two of them are opposites in many ways – Lola is outgoing, Solo is withdrawn but regardless they hit it off and may even get Solo’s life figured out… if Benny and Jules don’t catch up with him first. I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting much from this movie; I thought this would be some dodgy romantic comedy… or should that be ‘doggy’ romantic comedy. Instead, I found one of the best indie comedies that I’ve come across in a long time – sort of The Station Agent crossed with Garden State . Intelligent, light hearted and fun. Writer / Director Scott Caan , the son of acclaimed actor James Caan has done a top job in this film, and even appears as Solo’s best friend. While his film didn’t have the budget or the attention than it deserved, to be honest, it doesn’t really need it – this is just a good, character driven comedy that draws you in within the first few minutes. Cast List: Tim Allen Produced: 2006 Shaggy Dog By Mal Simons, Blockbuster.co.uk A great remake of the fifty year old Disney classic; funny man Tim Allen stars as a workaholic lawyer who hates dogs, and spends too little time with his family; who finds his life turned upside down when he suddenly turns into a great big shaggy sheepdog. Tim Allen stars as an ambitious Deputy District Attorney (like there’s any other kind!), Dave Douglas. He works long hours, forgets family events and generally neglects his wife and kids. It’s not that he is a nasty bloke; he’s just completely oblivious to the fact that he’s cutting his family out of his life. His latest case has him at odds with his daughter, as he seeks to convict one of her teachers in a trial involving animal testing in a biotech laboratory managed by the evil Dr. Marcus Kozak (played brilliantly by Robert Downey Jr ). When Dave Douglas is bitten by a sheepdog that has escaped from the biotech laboratory, he is infected with a gene-mutation which turns him into a sheepdog. This first manifests itself in court when he starts to randomly bark and growl at witnesses and other lawyers until, outside of court, he finds himself transformed into a sheepdog himself and adopted by his family as their pet. As a dog, Douglas gets to see his family for who they truly are and realises that he has not been the best husband or parent and endeavours to set things straight. First however, he must find a way to become human once more and stop the evil Dr. Marcus Kozak from conducting his evil experiments. I’ve been a life long Tim Allen fan and Allen does not disappoint me here. This film is immensely watchable and includes some great in-jokes to other classic Allen / Disney pictures, including Toy Story (look out for the “To Infinity and Beyond!” line). Robert Downey Jr. puts in a great performance too, and proves that he should play evil more often. Many critics criticised Shaggy Dog as being just a rehash of the 1950s original, and too similar to all other Tim Allen movies. I feel that these critics completely missed the point of the film. While feeling familiar; Shaggy Dog still holds enough twists and surprises to keep the entire family happy from kids through to adults. This was never meant to be Sin City (!) or a movie intended for two adults to watch on a Saturday night; but it does a great job in being a movie that everyone can enjoy – good, clean, safe fun for all the family and well worth a watch!
