Dry Eye In Dogs Treatment

OK just got back from the Vet?

Just got back from the vet with some of the dogs. My thoughts of what could be wrong with my one older girls were true. Dry eye. Sigh… Anyway, started her on cyclosporine drops for the eyes right now. I have heard of vets using Mucomyst as well to treat this in the eyes. I couldn’t imagine putting that stinky stuff in the dogs eyes every day. LOL For those of you that do not know about Mucomyst, it is a mucolytic that smells like rotten eggs! Back to the dry eye, for those of you that have treated this , what seemed to work the best for your dog treatment wise?
The cyclosporine drops is what I was given today from the vet.

The most cost effective medication I found was the cyclosporine in the drop form. I wasted way too much of the ointment while trying to get it into my wiggly Shih Tzu foster dogs’ eyes.

The drops averaged about $1.00/day (2 drops each eye 2x a day)

My vet also recommended I use an OTC artificial tear product as frequently as I wanted (in conjunction with the cyclosporine) I’ve forgotten the name of the medication and the brand(s) — call your vet and ask if and what they recommend. The stuff I used I bought at a regular drug store.

In Shih Tzus, it tends to be an inherited condition where the eyes do not produce (enough) tears. Blinking is the equivalent of windshield wipers on a dry windshield. If left treated it can lead to blindness. There is no real cure, but treatment *may* help prevent further degeneration.
