Dogs Heartworm Medicine
Alternative heartworm medicine treatment?
My dogs have tested + for heartworm. Has anyone out there tried alternative tx for heartworm. The Vet says there are no alternative that have been proven.
It is known that ivermectin will kill all stages of heart worm except the adult stage, but it renders it sterile. Research is starting to show that invermectim may be usefull in what is called a slow kill of the adult worm. repeated dose over a long period of time. to me this would be preferable to the current method of administering an arsenic based poison to kill the adult.
I’m not to sure on the dose required to do this. Your vet should be able to find out more about this if he’s prepared to do some research.
It may be also doing some research on Wolbachia. which is a bacteria that lives with the heart worm. It appears as if many of the problems associated with adult heart worm treatment are associated with the large numbers of these released as the parasite dies. many now give a course of antibiotics to kill off the Wolbachia before they kill the heartworm.
