Can a Small Dog get traumatized by big dogs in a dog park?
my sister took her Italian Greyhound to dog park for first time, it’s only 6 months and not socialized that much yet. The other dogs scared the living s**** out of the puppy by chasing her… can this have long term effects?
Yes, it can. A dog park is a very overwhelming experience for a puppy that is undersocialized, as there are lots of strange dogs, mostly Large Dogs, and it’s uncontrolled. People bring horribly behaved dogs all the time. A bad experience with other dogs for a puppy can definitely have long-term effects. I would recommend she enroll in a puppy obedience class. It’s a controlled environment, and any good trainer will make sure each dog is comfortable and having a good experience. She needs to have a LOT of good experiences with larger dogs/puppies now so that the frightening experience she had at the dog park does not have lasting negative effects on her temperament. If the local dog park does not have a separate ‘small dog’ area, I wouldn’t bring an IG there, many small dogs are killed in dog parks by larger dogs who view them as prey. I even know several medium-large dogs who were seriously injured at dog parks by aggressive dogs brought by irresponsible owners.
