How do apartment-dwellers manage to own/care for dogs?
I’m talking about people who own dogs AND work 8 hours a day. How do any of you (if you exist) care for your canine pets?
I’ve been thinking about getting a dog (a relatively small spitz-type dog; Shiba Inu, J-Spitz, American Eskimo, etc.) for the companionship, but I’m deathly afraid of leaving the poor thing locked in an apartment every day from 9 to 5! Sometimes even longer, because of the nature of my job.
I know that I would just shower the little animal with love and attention when I’d get back from work, but then I’d think of how neglected it’ll feel during the other hours, and I keep thinking that I wouldn’t be doing any dog a favor by adopting one the way my current daily routine is like. T___T
The first thing you have to remember is that if everyone who had a job could not have a dog, then NO ONE would have a dog. Working is a part of life. I have to be in the city from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM Monday through Friday, and I have a Big Dog. How do I do it? Plenty of ways, if you know people that can help, in my case my mom, doggy daycare, pet walkers. These are all tools that you can use. I have to take the train into the city, however if you dont live very far from your house, you could go home on your lunch break and eat something quick while you feed the dog, then take him/her out for a walk before you head back to work. The main thing to remember is that there is always a way, and when you start to look around your area as to how many dog friendly places are out there, you’ll be shocked. I had no idea that there were several dog daycares all within 10 minutes of my house, and I live in a smaller town.
Just get a system going, and your dog will fall into it. My system is walking the dog prior to me leaving the house, my mom stopping by and spending a few hours with the dog, and if she cant I take it to the dog daycare, then I go home and take the dog for a run/walk, then again before bed he goes for another walk.
Whats nice about doggy daycares is that they charge a flat fee for the entire day, so you can drop your dog off in the early morning before work, and pick him/her up when you get out and not pay a penny more. Check into Dog Daycare.
Also if you are going to get a dog, PLEASE go to the Animal Shelters first, I got my dog from an Animal Shelter, those poor dogs get put to sleep if they cant find homes, and alot of them are the most amazing animals. Thats where I found my dog and hes the sweetest dog in the world.
