How to environmentally dispose of dog waste?

Yep, I’ve seen this question has been sort of asked before, and I am aware of the “Dog septic system” thing.

My question is Can I drop the entire bio-degratable bag into this system? or am I supposed to remove it from the bag first?

I can’t figure out the best way to do this. I didn’t think it would be so complicated. I have weight all the options out at: http://environment.bwebcentral.com/?p=16 and I am at a loss to to the best option.

Why are biodegradable bags involved with dog-poo anyway? I am a big fan of a bucket and a shovel!

If you live in a very public area, such as an apartment complex, or if you routinely take your dog to relieve himself in a park or something, I can see the need for removing the poo lest you be fined for leaving it. I can also see that if you have a small backyard and large or multiple dogs the place may get “to capacity” rather quickly. (I am aware the the aroma of a large quantity of doggie-shite is not pleasant.) However, I am still a proponent of the ol’ “throw it over the fence” method. That is, if you’ve got the resources — like a ditch by the road, a woods, a back field, etc…or good neighbors that wouldn’t mind the extra fertilizer on theirs…I’d simply grab a shovel, heap the lot into a reusable bucket and give it back to nature. Every other animal poos in the woods (i.e. ground) and the breakdown of the poo’s organic matter puts minerals and nutrients into the soil. If your yard is large enough, don’t bother and let the piles lie. In only a matter of days they will be reduced to soil-like texture, with no real “step-on” danger.

I do get the smell thing — but that is also always a side-effect to living creatures. Have you ever been on a farm? All those critters smell — it comes with the territory. Have you ever walked in the loo right after it was…in use? Then you’ll know that we, too, are capable of some pretty gnarly aromas. Owning a dog(s) means that having a little bit of unpleasant odor is inevitable. Poo really only smells when it’s fresh, however, so if you sprinkle some dirt over droppings that are particularly causing your nose distress, it should drastically mitigate the stench, and leave the pile to decompose on its own within a few days.

I know this really might not have been a big help, but it comes down to the fact that we humans like to make waste removal a big deal — throw it away! Get rid of it! Get it outta sight! We’d all be doing our business in the woods ourselves if it weren’t for our lovely plumbing systems — NOT really environmentally friendly itself when you think about it. So if you have the opportunity to just let a sleeping dog’s (shite) lie, take it.
