Dog Tug

My new dog growls while playing tug-of-war with me and my husband. Is this normal?

This is the only time we hear her growl. I just want to make sure we aren’t encouraging bad behavior and toy possessiveness. She really gets into it and has accidentally bitten us a couple times when we are pulling on the toy.
We just rescued her. She’s about 5 or 6 years old.

Yes it is normal and ok. But just make sure that you always win. Sometimes a dog will think he/she is more dominant if he/she wins every time you play tug-o-war. Tug-o-war is not recommended for dogs that already have a dominance problem. But if your dog is not dominant and recognizes you as the pack leaders, then it is ok to play that way with her. My dog is a little dog and he never growls other than when we play tug-o-war. It’s funny and so odd to hear him do it.
