How to introduce a dog to remote collar?

As per the instructions of my Vet, behaviorist and professional trainer I got a remote collar for one of my dogs. It’s a Innotek, has stim AND vibrate. The behaviorist and trainer said I should introduce it to him teaching him to heel on a leash, because he doesn’t at all. One of the trainers had a YouTube, panzertoo. And said to do just like she did introducing a dog. I’m aware they’re professionals but I was just curious, should I be seeing a remote training specialist too, to make sure everything goes smoothly? The others have knowledge but it’s not as much as I think I need.

SIgh… a remote collar is actually a beautiful thing. When introduced to it correctly it allows you to offer your dog a whole range of freedoms and latitude that people who keep their mind closed to any training tool other than a bag of treats cannot imagine.What’s more, many of the same people who refuse to use them regularly visit dog parks and cut their dogs loose to go play with other dogs that they don’t know. If you want to talk about cruel and inhumane, putting yourself in a situation like this without knowing for sure you can call your dog from 50 feet away and he will leave a pack of dogs and come to you seems like it fits that definition to me. Those who claim to hold the patent on gentle and humane treatment of dogs are often the ones who expose their dogs to the most dangerous situations.

Every dog reaches a CORRETIONS stage in obedience training. And I mean EVERY DOG. This is a stage in training where they become equipment savvy, and start recognizing situations where you’re unable to physically reinforce a command and there is something to do that interests them more than obeying that command. An e-collar is a great ‘finishing tool.’ But it is just that, something to finish up and polish off the obedience training, not something to start with. You need to build a basic obedience groundwork with this dog… gently guide him through the stages of complying with a command and then do lots of repetition and practice until he understands it perfectly in a quiet, distraction free environment.

Then you need to start gradually building in layers of distraction, starting small and building up to working out doors at a distance. You need to wait for the point where you are 100% sure the dog completely understands a command, has obeyed it properly time and time again without fail. And then the distraction level gets so great that the dog does not even look at you when you say his name and issue the command. THEN, you bring in the e-collar. To emphasize: The e collar has no place in training any command until you are 100% positive the dog fully and completely understands it and responds the same way every time in a low-distraction environment.

If you are reinforcing commands, a low-level nick, just enough to make him turn and look at you, is all you need. Do one command at a time with the e-collar until the dog becomes conditioned to recognize the stimulus and respond appropriately and then move onto the next. The collar can be on pretty much all day, but if the dog turns and responds, stimulation isn’t necessary.

The e-collar can be used to work on misbehaviors, but be careful. You have to time it right and know EXACTLY what you’re doing, otherwise you’ll confuse the dog and actually escalate his level of excitement. E collars should not be used on aggressive dogs who are already in attack mode. E collars should generally not be used on a dog that’s already worked up and super-excited, as the situation is too confusing for them. It is relatively easy to teach yourself the proper timing for reinforcing commands, but I HIGHLY recommend you do some research and train yourself in the proper use before using it to fix any misbehaviors.
