Shih Tzu Topknot?

We have a shih tzu puppy, six months old, and we want his fur to grow out, now very long but not short, and his fur is all in his eyes (my dads failed attempt at trimming it) but i was just wondering,

i have shih tzus but mine are clipped all year round and don’t have a top knot,when they were puppies i used a material hair band and normal hair clip as Long as you don’t put it in to tight and it pulls the top of there head you should be fine
