Dog Tick Treatment

My dog hates his monthly flea/tick treatment (frontline.) Are there other options?

My dog freaks out each month when we have to put his frontline on. It is stressful and we generally mess up and the stuff ends up all over him, us, the floor. I wish there was a pill or something else, but I haven’t been able to find any other options. Does anyone have any ideas for something that is not topical?
He is a rescue so I don’t know what his early experience is with application of frontline. We are trying to train him to do bettter with it, but he has some anxiety issues that really make him sensitive to certain things.

It really is a very effective flea control treatment and you shouldn’t give up on it just because your dog freaks out! I had this same problem with my cat, I think the smell freaked him out and then it was very difficult to get him to hold still long enough to get the medicine on him. The trick is to have him associate the medicine with something GOOD and not let him think that freaking out is the way to behave when it’s time for his dose. A great start is to get his nose busy with a desirable smell BEFORE you start getting the medicine on him. Have another person hold a chunk of steak or chicken or if you are by yourself fill a KONG with something really delicious and hold the Kong firmly between your knees so that his head is down and he is concentrating on getting at the yummy meat. This will place his neck in the perfect position to easily apply the medication. If he starts associating the medicine with something delicious he will not fight or freak out when it is dosing time.
