Dog Roundworm Treatment

Roundworm medication for cats?

I am currently living overseas, and I am having a hard time finding a Vet that speaks English well enough to answer my specific questions about roundworm, so any help would be appreciated. I recently found roundworm in the stool of my cat (I determined it was roundworm after comparing it to some pics on the internet). A few days before I noticed the worm, my vet gave my cat “Advocate” brand medication for heart worm prevention. However, cats are not common pets here, and all he had was the formula for small dogs. It was a gel like substance that was put on the back of her neck. Does anyone know if this is a good brand? When I brought her in today, he told me the medication he gave her a few days ago was also for roundworm, and he also gave me two pills (not sure what they are) to give her by mouth this week and next week, and told me to bring her back for more Advocate in 30 days. I’ve never dealt with roundworm before. Does that sound like a realistic treatment?

Advocate contains Imidacloprid and Moxidectin. Generally it’s a good treatment and safe for cats (no significant difference between cat and Small Dog dosages). It’s a pretty good brand, one of my top two preferences for flea control in dogs and cats. The worm control is just a bonus.

The moxidectin is a macrocyclic lactone and is effective against roundworms (and for preventing heartworm coincidentally). It’s absorbed through the skin and does its job well enough.

I suspect the pills may be a combination of another macocyclic lactone, a Benzimidazole (A drug name that ends in ____isole) and praziquantel. That should do all intestinal worms and tape worm. It’s probably overmedicating, but without knowing exactly what they are or the condition of the cat I can’t be sure.

I’m happy to answer any questions about parasites if you want to send me a message. It’s good practice for me.
