where can i adopt a puppy/dog that wont break the bank?

my family wants to adopt a large breed puppy/dog but all the shelters want $300.00 or more. we can afford to feed and provide medical care for the puppy/dog but that up front cost is almost as much as going to a breeder. any advice would be appreciated. we r in the madison wisconsin area.
