I need help with my dog! Please answer!?

I have a border collie. She is 10 months and really bad (behavioral wise anyway). She doesn’t pee or poop in the house. But she does every bad thing possible. She jumps on you when she’s on the leash because she wants to chew on the handle, growls, bites, chews on anything & everything, jumps on everyone,barks constantly, and anything else you can think of. She has caused scars, bruises, cuts, bite marks, etc, etc. She has broken 5 leashes, necklaces, etc. She only lets me pet on her occasionally after it takes forever to calm her down. I just don’t know how to get the energy out of her. I love her dearly but it would be just easier if she behaved better. I’m begging anyone to give me any knowledge of getting her to behave. thank you so much to who answers! i really appreciate it!

You need to work on training her. You also need to make sure you are meeting her mental and physical needs.

Border collies are and extremely high energy dog If I were to rate dogs on an energy scale of 1-10 I would give border collies a 10. This does not make them bad dogs, but it does make them a dog that needs an owner who can provide the proper amount of exercise for them. Your dog needs to be run (not a stroll, a fast passed get your heart rate up pace) at least 2 times a day for at least 45 minutes a time. She needs an additional 30-35 minutes minimum of active play. (fetch, frisbee, etc). These are the minimums for a dog with this level of energy.

Border collies are also very smart and need mental stimulation. If I were to again use a scale of 1-10 they would get a 9 in intelligence. This means you need to keep her mind stimulated. This is done through training and activities that give her purpose. You should be doing a few 30 minute training sessions everyday. Once she has basics down you should graduate to things like fly ball, agility, etc.

She jumps and bites because she is not trained yet not too, and because she has to much pent up energy. This is also why it takes you so long to calm her down enough to pet her. I’m also sure her growling is playful excited growls and not growls of aggression. You need to teach her manners, but she will not be calm enough to learn manners unless you start making sure she gets enough exercise to get her energy level down.

To teach her not to jump – when she jumps on you turn your body away from her, cross your arms, and ignore her. Until she stops. When she does stop turn back toward her and praise, if she jumps up again repeat. She will learn jumping means she is ignored and attention is only given when sh is on the ground. Another method is to teach her the sit command first when she jumps say a firm no, then instruct her to sit and praise the sit behavior. You can then command a sit before a jump to stop the action before it happens.

For her chewing on her leash, spray it with something like bitter apple so that it tastes bad, when she turns to bite it make a sharp noise to get her attention, and say leave it. When she ignores it and focuses in you praise her.

Chewing is taught in much the same way, she should be supervised at all times until properly trained. When she goes for an item that’s not hers you make a sharp noise to get her attention when she looks point to the item and say leave it. Then call her to you and give her something she can chew. When she starts playing with the item she can have reward and praise her. It takes repetition but it will work if you do it right.
