Dog Nylon Grooming

Situations where training can benefit from the use of prong collars?

I use prong collars along with a ‘safety’ nylon grooming collar to walk the dogs at the kennel where I work. The owners there also use them for training. So naturally they are my first idea of a Training Collar to use for my future adult rescue Pit Bull dog. I do not support the harsh use of these collars, and intend on only ever using gentle corrections, although I really don’t have any on-hand experience training with these collars. What I would like to know is a) you’re stance on controversial uses of prong collars, and b) what are the right situations you would most use a prong collar (for example, a dog who pulls on the leash,) and when isn’t it necessary.

Less physical effort is needed by the handler to correct the dog. They are ideal for those with large strong dogs & little upper body strength, such as small women, older folks or those with shoulder or arm problems due to disability or injury. The can also be of benefit to those training from wheelchairs or who walk with a cane. (I have RA, my hands & sense of balance ain’t what they used to be!)

Many dogs will self correct if they forge or lag in a pinch collar. If properly fitted and used, they do not choke or gag the dog as they do not crush the trachea like a standard chain training collar or Buckle Collar can do.

They do not damage the coat as much as slip or buckle collars do- a consideration w/ coated show dogs. They will stay in place up behind the ears when properly fitted & it is almost impossible for a dog to slip or back out of one. (a trick many smart dogs use on inexperienced handlers)

I use them on certain dogs, but they are not suitable for all and you have to know how to use one. Most of the time when I see someone just out w/ their dog w/ one, they do not have it properly fitted. When anyone reacts to the name (well, I call them pinch collars, not prongs as prong means sharp to most people and they are not sharp & do not cut the dog) I just have them put it around their thigh or arm and see that it is a pinch and not a sharp poke.

In nature, the mother trains her pups by pinching them on the scruff of the neck, it is is in reality a familiar & natural sensation to the dog & much more so that the choking sensation of a slip or buckle collar.

They are generally the wrong thing w/ trainers w/ heavy hands, young pups, very soft dogs etc and, of course, they are not allowed at AKC events.
