why do so many German Shepherd owners muzzle there dog?

i see a muzzled german shepherd offen when i go on the streets, more then any other breed. why are they? i heard that a gsd is a really smart and Good Dog then why do so many owners have them muzzled when out in public more then any other breeds?

I have NEVER seen a muzzled GSD in the street, nor in a park, nor at a show – and I’ve been involved with GSDs for a LONG time!

Reason #1:
The dog has been declared a DD (=Dangerous Dog) in Court. To be allowed to stay alive, such dogs must be fenced so that the public can not reach them (and vice versa) and be muzzled and on-lead when off their home property.

Reason #2:
The owner has not properly trained the dog, with the result that it does what IT likes, and the owner cannot get an insurance company to accept him for insurance against biting (probably because the owner has a history of one or more of his poorly-trained dogs biting people or animals).

Reason #3:
That dog is a fear biter and the owner is unobservant so never notices the dog’s signs (that it is worried) until too late – if crowded by a child or some such, a fear-biter will snap at that person or dog.

Reason #4:
The owner engages in DogSport or RingSport, where the dogs have to do such as tell a “criminal” to stand still until the owner catches up, then escort the “criminal” until the owner tells it to let the “criminal” leave, and then to grab the padded sleeve worn by the “criminal” after he suddenly turns around and charges, yelling, in an attempt to “attack” the owner. This aspect, commonly called “Manwork”, is the third part of SchH and IPO, the other parts being obedience and tracking. Many of the dogs LOVE the sleeve, seeing it as a great tug-o-war game, and are often allowed to carry it away after the “criminal” & owner say the exercise is over. But because the public image is “fierce dog trained to attack humans”, the trainer knows that almost any judge would order the dog executed should it bite for any reason whatsoever, so is ensuring that it can’t happen accidentally.

Were they Greyhounds, it could be that they are owned by a racing kennel – here, the Greyhound racing club requires that all its members muzzle their dogs when on the streets or when being walked more than one at a time. The reason is that a Greyhound has VERY fast reflexes, and 2 walking side by side can have one kill the other before the handler has time to react; a passing cat or Chihuahua or squirrel can also be dead before the handler has time to react. So the club sets requirements to provide safety for the hounds and other animals.

No properly bred GSD with a sensible owner needs to be muzzled.
Members of my e-group have GSDs that run the farm, doing such as instinctively killing a crow that landed in the hen yard one day; then a few days later instinctively one-at-a-time catching the chooks that escaped from the run, bringing each indignant-but-unhurt escapee to the owner to put back in the run. Other members have GSDs that protect and sleep-with the household cats.

Certainly GSDs will bite when defence is required, but it is not the shaking-&-tearing bite commonly delivered by various terriers, it is a grip-&-hold to stop the person or predator from running away.
