Dog Medicines Online
Has anyone given their dog Metcam and had problems?
My rat terrier was prescribed Metcam for a leg injury. She had been taking it for two weeks when she started having really bad diarrhea. According to the prescription info, a side effect of the medicine is diarrhea, and it said to contact a Vet. So, I did, and the vet said to just stop giving it to her. So, I did, but four days later she still has diarrhea, and when I spoke to the vet again, he said to give her Mylanta. I read online that some inflammatory meds like Metcam and Rimadyl can cause liver failure, and although the vet said she would be fine, I can’t help but worry, and giving her an otc medicine for humans doesn’t seem like a satisfactory answer. To make matters worse, I live in a tiny rural area, and we only have two vets–my vet and a guy who has a terrible drinking problem and whose office is rarely open–so I can’t really get a second opinion. Has anyone else had trouble with this medicine?
I knew a lady who gave Deramaxx a different NSAID as a post surgical pain medication. Her dog started having liver problems. We got her started on IV fluids and did bloodwork about every day for a week. I wouldn’t think that the loose stool would continue for a week after you stopped the Metacam. We have been using Metacam for about 2 years now and have never had a problem. I would be very careful about giving the dog any type of NSAID in the future. I know that with the dog on Deramaxx the company paid for part of the treatment. Also any type of side affects should be reported to the company.
Find a new vet in a different town. If not tell the doctor to do a Chemistry and CBC on your dog. A different type of medication that would work well for your dog for its leg issue is Tramadol. It is not related to deramaxx, metacam, or rimadyl.
