Dog has staph infection: cost and meds ?

I am adopting an abused and dumped 3 year old Shih Tzu. The pound says she has a staff infection and looks really bad. They say that they Vet will probably put her on cephalexin to treat this.

My first question is how much does the medicine usually cost and I’ve seen online website that sell the capsules for around $0.20 each. Do i ask for a prescription of buy it from the vet when I take her? This is my first dog so very confused.
Second question is that I found out I was allergic to penicillin and have a bunch of Cephalexin 500mg. Could I just possibly cut those in half and give those to her? Or bring them with me to the appt and has him?

Yes, it’s the same drug, and yes you could cut them down to the same size dosage that the vet would give you. But I’d take them with you and tell the vet you’re planning to do this, because you need to know the dosage.
Anyone who takes antibiotics, dogs included, should take a probiotic that has 50 billion live cells in it while they’re on the drug and for 2 weeks after in order to replenish the “good” gut bacteria that’s killed off by the antibiotic. This is important to maintain the health of your immune system. If you don’t you will be less able to ward off future encounters with bad bacteria or viruses.
