Off Leash Training – How do I teach my dog to not go after other dogs?

I’ve got a lot covered in the off-leash training, I think (any more info would be great!)

What you’re really trying to do is have your dog under control off the lead, even when there are tempting distractions around. The first thing is to have your dog well trained on the leash. Rather than reacting when you see a dog (you’re doing exactly what you are telling your dog NOT to do) you need to use a consistent approach. This means, that every time, every minute your dog is on the leash, it’s attention is on you. Do this by keeping the leash short, but don’t put any pressure on it – you aren’t holding your dog in place – you’re teaching the dog to stay in place voluntarily. Then, you walk and you watch your dog’s every action. Every time it looks around, or appears distracted by ANYTHING, you give a quick jerk on the leash (not hard – just enough to get the dog’s attention instantly) and make a noise of disapproval (whatever noise or word you choose). I personally thing a harsh, low noise like “arrkkkkgh!!” is good – it’s easy to do on reflex and sounds disapproving. Your dog will learn very quickly that it’s attention needs to be on you all the time. This method is also good for dogs that are nervous – they learn that you are in charge, and they just need to watch you and all will be well. My friend’s dog had phobias of just about everything outside and was impossible to walk, but after just a few days of this, became quite confident! The trick is to never be harsh – just firm and uncompromising and CONSISTENT!!
Ok, so once you have an attentive dog walking reliably on the leash, ignoring distractions, the next step is to let it off. Of course the dog will know when it’s free, and will take off. The way to fix that little problem is with some very light, but strong nylon cable. Buy it from the hardware store. It needs to have as little weight as possible, but be strong enough for you to stop your dog in it’s tracks with it without it breaking.
Buy a length of about 10 metres (30feet), and tie it to the dog’s collar securely. Tie the other end around something you can hold onto and pull without burning/cutting your hand. Then, put the dog’s normal leash on it as well.
Take the dog walking, as normal, with the same control as before, but this time, when safe, let the dog off it’s normal leash. Your dog will then think it’s free. When it takes off to investigate another dog or whatever it’s interested in, hold the end of the nylon rope securely, and try calling your dog back. If your dog ignores you, let it go the length of the rope, then pull hard, calling it’s name. It should be a hard enough tug to make the dog lose it’s balance, but not be injured. The dog will be puzzled because it won’t have realised it was tethered to anything. Call the dog again, and pull it towards you using the rope. When it finally gets to you, give it a treat and praise.
Repeat this process until your dog learns that unpleasant things happen when it ignores your call.
This is also a good way to teach a dog not to run onto the road if it has a habit of doing so.
I hope these methods help. Like I said though, consistency and firmness are very important. Don’t let your dog get away with doing the wrong thing at all, or it will have to pay the price the next time you get mad at it for not doing what it was told!
