I’ve noticed that many older folks who were raised in the country think it’s bad to let cats in the house. Why?

When I was growing up in the country, my grandma and all her neighbors expressly forbid cats from going inside the house, but dogs were allowed.

Does anyone know what this custom is based on?

Fleas. And also cats will drag things into a house with them. Dead mice and things like that. Also outdoor cats may not be catbox trained and no one likes cats to take care of business on the carpet or other places. And then cats like to jump up on tables and countertops when no one is looking. A lot of people think that is unsanitary.
