Dog Health Diagnosis

Would you spend this kind of money on your elderly pet?
Recently, my 16 year old cocker spaniel’s health took a turn for the worst. $2,600 later, we still don’t have a complete diagnosis. We did an MRI to scan the brain for tumors, and or stroke. Now we are being told that the dog is anemic and needs an ultra sound of his stomach to see what is causing diarrhea and anemia.
Is it common for old dogs to get anemia? How many of you would spend $300-$600 to get an ultra sound? Any thoughts
The short answer is: Yes, I would spend.
My dog Katie, a poodle mix, had a Neurologist for a while when she was 15. I spent around $3000 for Xrays and MRI’s. I would do it all over again because the life of a pet is as important as a family members.
I am not saying that you should or should not. If this is out of your range consider your situation first and the overall well being of your pet. You must trust that your veterinarian is a specialist and is trying to provide you with the best options. Ask what your options are and the costs of everything. Maintain open communication with your Vet. Is an ultrasound really necessary?
Perhaps get a second opinion.
As far as anemia goes you should research more on the particular types of ailments that strike cocker spaniels. As dogs age they get many of the same afflictions that humans can, the body is only meant to last for so long. With good medical treatment you can make that life a good one with well informed decisions and love for your pet.
It’s so hard because you can’t ask your dog what they would like to do or how bad it hurts. Just be kind to your pet and yourself.

Psychiatric Diagnosis $166 Psychiatric diagnosis is one of the most important topics within the broad field of psychiatry. Clear, accurate definitions of the various disorders are essential for clinicians around the world to be confident that they are classifying patients in the same way, thereby enabling comparisons of treatment regimens and their outcomes. There are two major classification systems in use, one produced by the World Health Organization, the WHO International Classification of Diseases, Mental Disorders Chapter, and one by the American Psychiatric Association, the well known Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Both of these are being revised so this book from the prestigious World Psychiatric Association is especially timely. In this book, leading experts in the field provide a broad and integrated coverage of the concepts, structure and context of psychiatric diagnosis. It begins by addressing mental health and illness around the world from historical, philosophical and cultural perspectives. Health is approached comprehensively, to include such aspects as resilience, resources and quality of life. The book then covers major specific psychopathology topics in Section II, including new categorizations and dimensional approaches. Section III concentrates on the complex problem of comorbidity, a primary challenge for modern diagnostic classifications in psychiatry. Finally, Section IV reviews emerging international diagnostic systems in psychiatry, considering innovative models and adaptations. This book will be essential reading for anyone involved in the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders. |

A Theological Diagnosis $39.95 As society becomes progressively dominated by an ideology of healthy living, Matt Edmonds makes a vital critique of contemporary efforts to remove 'disability' from the world around us. Surveying the logic and language of both secular and religious health movements, Edmonds highlights the misplaced generalisations and dubious values that cumulatively serve to undermine individual inclusion and well-being on a day-to-day basis. 'A Theological Diagnosis' seeks a new direction. From the resources of Christian theology it finds a paradigm with which to examine the infections of genetic theory, faith healing and the meaning of 'disability' so as to prescribe a way forward for both believer and non-believer alike. Combining history, theology and thoughtful analysis, this is a prescription that none of us can afford to ignore. Quite simply, there is little time left. |

After the Diagnosis $9.99 After the Diagnosis is a heartfelt and moving lesson on the art of living well through serious illness. Dr. Julian Seifter understands the difficulty of managing a chronic condition in our health-obsessed, take-life-by-the-horns, live-forever world. When he found out he was suffering from diabetes, he was an ambitious medical resident who thought he could run away from his diagnosis. Good health was part of his self-image, and acknowledging that he needed treatment seemed like a kind of failure. In his practice, however, as he helped his patients come to terms with serious conditions, he began to understand that there were different, better ways to approach a life-altering diagnosis. In this frank account of his experiences both as a doctor and as a patient, he shares the many lessons he has learned. Writing with his wife, who has been an essential partner in his own treatment, he teaches you how to contend not only with the physical problems, the social stigma, and the emotional fallout of illness, but also with the medical establishment. Convinced that a deeper understanding of the spiritual, emotional, and physical challenges will bring not only comfort and support but also better care, he emphasizes truths rarely acknowledged in medical writing:• that a patient is not simply a collection of signs and symptoms, but someone with a particular personality, psychology, and history; someone with idiosyncratic wishes and goals• that blame, anxiety, obsession, and shame are inevitably part of the psychological journey, and that the doctor-patient relationship needs to make room for the whole person, including these difficult emotions• that sometimes doctor and patient have to throw out the rule book and construct highly personal, creative solutions• that denial, acting out, and “being bad” can sometimes be of benefit in managing illness• that optimism and emotional resilience— both of which can be cultivated and nourished by the doctor—may contribute to what medicine calls luck • that sickness, usually seen as alien and destructive, can become a vehicle for growth and self- realization The message, in short, is: You are not your disease. You are you. Paradoxically, rather than destroy your identity, the experience of sickness can deepen your sense of who you are and what you can become. |
