Dog Harness Large

Okay, I am having two issues with my dog and I would love some advice on how to handle both.?

I have a 6 month old puppy who is going to be a large dog. She is really a sweet and pretty obedient dog. We have taken her to puppy class and she is now in Basic Obedience. I have two issues that really bother me. First, there are times when we are getting ready to take a walk that when I get out her harness she starts running away and barking and then she stops and stares at me and just barks. I can’t catch her so I have to ignore her to get her to come to me. The other issue is that she does great on her walks, but as soon as we walk back into the yard she starts acting like a nut. She starts biting the leash and jumping. It is the weirdest thing because she is so good on her walks. She also does the yard thing with my husband. Please help!

1. Your first problem may have to do with the association she has with walks. Try asking her to come and rewarding with a treat, then have her stand still, reward again, and finally put the harness on. You may have to start with the “come” and work up to putting the harness on but she will eventually realize that the harness means treats and walks and she’ll make the association you want her to.
2. This issue has to do with her being excited to be home again and expecting something, like a treat. You may have inadvertantly trained her to do this by praising her and rewarding her after a good walk and now she anticipates it. My dog does this occasionally. I simply ignore him until he calms down and I never remove the leash or harness until he’s acting the way I want.
It sounds like you already have a great dog and a good training foundation. Fixing small problems like these should be quick. Your obedience trainer may also have some helpful suggestions.
