Am I the only one who thins dog shows are creepy?

Whenever I see a dog show, I feel really sorry for the dogs. They’re not allowed to run and play, or work, or anything. I don’t believe that at all dogs are friendly and need to be pets, but I don’t like the idea of dog’s genetic diversity and special talents being wasted on people who merely spend all their time grooming them to run around in a circle a few times for a judge.

I agree to a point. I have been involved in dog shows but have been turned off by them for life. The people in the shows are so freaking title and money-hungry. All they care about it crushing the other dog. They go to long lengths to make their dog “appear” better than another.
I do think showing your dog is necessary if you are going to be a breeder, because all the best breeders I know show their dogs to prove each dog meets the breed standard, and those dogs usually go above and beyond as a fantastic specimen of his breed.

I do not think you are ignorant, but I do disagree with you on two points:
First, the dogs are allowed to be “pets” in most cases. There are some extreme cases where the handlers/owners are so insane that they indeed do keep them in kennels for most of their lives, only coming out for exercise on the treadmill or to go to a show, of course. Some owners fear their dogs getting “dirty” so they will not allow them regular play or doggie time. But most show dogs are also pets and area allowed to be “dogs”.
Second, these dogs are actually usually the most healthy specimens of their breed because the owners intend for them to be bred, so they insure that the dogs have passed all the necessary breed-specific health tests. But I agree 100% with you that MOST of the breeding protocals are completely ridiculous. Some breeders consider their dogs’ “prelim” ratings to be enough to breed their dog, and they breed before an actual rating is given. In another case, some breeders breed a dog who is only “pointed”, NOT finished, because they consider that at, “at least they are showing the dog”. But that to me is unacceptable because the dog is NOT finished. I mean, what is the freaking rush???

So, for the most part, I cannot stand show dog people and their practices and beliefs, but they are at least taking part in making sure their dogs meet the breed standard.

As an example of why I do not like show dog people, I took my rescued blue-merle Aussie With a Tail to a local Australian Shepherd breed-club sponsored dog show where he was entered in the cluster Obedience trial. He was among countless other Aussies, all of course without tails, as they were all docked at birth. Nevermind I am against tail-docking, but they were all shocked and “disgusted” at the fact that I happen to have an Aussie with a tail. They all insisted he was NOT an Aussie and did not belong there. I of course insisted he was indeed ALL Aussie but simply has a tail, the important body part they all chose to cut off at birth.
Well, anyway, that whole experience confirmed my thoughts that these people are freaking scary at times. Kinda like, all they care about is cosmetic looks and anything “different” freaks them out. No wonder they will NEVER consider changing the breed standard to include tailed Aussies! Makes me wish I lived in the UK.
