Grooming scissors are sharper, smaller, easier to handle, and shaped so as to cut the hair more precisely. Kitchen scissors will work if you just need to snip a few hairs off here and there, but if you really want to groom your whole dog and make it look nice you don’t want to rely on them.

In fact, scissors of any sort should be used with caution. If you don’t know what you are doing or if the dog squirms while you are trimming him, you can end up giving your dog a pretty nasty cut. To remove mats (which are close to the skin) and to do most of the trimming on your dog, it’s safer to use a good grooming clipper. Scissors should only be used for a little shaping.

Like the question of specialized scissors, you will want a really nice set of clippers just for your dog if you plan on grooming your dog on a regular basis. But if you just need to clip off a few mats from time to time, you can get by with a cheap set of clippers.
