Dog Grooming for the not so happy pup?

I have a maltese who just hates anything that has to do with grooming. Showers are bad but cutting his hair is even worse. When I try to cut his hair he whines and nips at my hand or the scissors. I am looking for something that will help me calm him down so I can finish the job. I have already tried some calming syrum, but it did not work.

Take him to a dog groomer! Sounds like it would be well worth the cost.
