Dogs and flea bites?

About 3 weeks ago, I noticed my three year old Border Collie was scratching, biting at his back and writhing around the floor. We’ve only had him since January, but he hadn’t been doing any of the above. I checked his coat and couldn’t see any fleas or their dirts, but saw that he did have a few small patches of rash [almost like eczema]. We brought him to the Vet and he said they were probably flea bite reactions, which would be uncommon around this time of year with the temperature [it's been really cold in Ireland lately]. We didn’t use any treatment on him and he hasn’t really been scratching since, but a few days ago it started again.
If they are flea bites as the vet said, is there anything I can do? The vet said that if we came back in the closer to summer he’d give us a treatment for it.
Is it possible to just get the odd flea or two given that it has been cold lately, or are there other possible causes that the vet might have missed?

Do you have central heating in your house? Was there central heating where he was previously? Fleas can live in centrally heated homes all year round, so I think your vets reaction is a little odd – if he thought it was strange to see a flea reaction, he should have taken skin scrapings to be sure.

It could be a mite infection of some sort, and you’d need a microscopic sample taken to ascertain which insect/parasite was causing the rash.

I treat my dogs with Frontline all year round as a flea preventative – and I’m only across the water from you here in England. I’m amazed your vet didn’t suggest this, but you can always request it from him, or if you have a SCATS country store near you, you can buy it there.

Good luck – hope you find out what’s causing it – one of my GSDs had a severe flea allergy, she’d had an infestation before I owned her, and just one or two bites after that would bring on the rash and she’d chew the hair off in patches until it was treated.
