Can roundworms kill a 7-year old dog?

I’m worried that my dog may have roundworms, lately he’s been low on energy, has had diarrhea and looks like he lost weight, also what is the best treatment for a dog with roundworms? would it be to just buy a medicine online or go to a Vet?

A seven year-old dog is not likely to die of roundworms. (It’s possible, but it would be unusual for roundworms to be fatal. However they can cause unthriftiness and compound other medical problems).

If it truly is roundworms, many over-the-counter dewormers will be effective if at least two doses are given two weeks apart. You can find dog dewormers at pet stores and feed stores commonly.

However, you do not know that it is roundworms. Diarrhea can be caused by many different medical problems, as can weight loss and lethargy (tiredness / lack of energy). If he’s been on monthly heartworm prevention, roundworms are even less likely (most heartworm tablets also contain dewormers).

The BEST thing to do is to make an appointment with a vet and bring a stool sample (bring the freshest one you can). The vet can check for roundworms and other parasites and will be able to look for other causes of diarrhea as well. Then you will get a specific treatment for the diarrhea.

And even if it is worms, it’s good to have a vet managing the case (instead of just buying OTC dewormer) because the vet can check the stool again after treatment to make sure it was effective. Sometimes worms require more than two doses, and the only way to tell is to have the vet check the stool.
