How do I keep my Dachshund (Weaner Dog) from chewing things up?

I find these dogs to be very stubborn. He continuously will chew underwear and if I leave him at home he will chew stuff out of the trash cans. He runs off and does not listen. Does anyone else have this problem?

My dachshund does the same thing. After 7 years, he has not outgrown his chewing habit.
#1 Do not let him near any stuffed animals. Scold him when he gets anywhere near your personal belongings that you do not want him to chew. Send him somewhere for a “time-out” such as a kennel or other isolated space for a few minutes. When you let him out, just ignore him for a little while so he gets the point that that is not a good thing. A little later, you can go back to petting him.

#2 Make sure to positively reinforce GOOD behavior. Give your dog something he is supposed to chew on (e.g. rawhide, nylabone, etc) and praise him for it. This way he knows, “Okay, don’t chew underwear. Do chew what my owner gives me.” He learns what the parameters are.

#3 Dachshunds have a very strong sense of smell and will get into the trashcan. My dog can’t help it sometimes when his nose leads him to the trashcan. And, as disgusting as this sounds, used tissues are absolutely irresistable to him. He just forgets the rules when he smells one in the trashcan. We purchased trashcans with lids that do not come off easily. The best one is a metal one. He doesn’t even want to go near it. Otherwise, shut the door to a room with a trashcan that you do not want him to enter.

Oh..also, about the running off and not listening part. I trained my dachshund by allowing him off the leash for a little bit and, if he started to run off, swatting him with the soft end of the leash or attaching it to him again. When he comes when you call him, praise him a lot (positive reinforcement again). Now, when I go out, I just have to have the leash in my hand and he knows not try to run away.
