We want a dog – should I declaw my cats?
We currently have two cats and are seriously considering adding a new family member – a dog. Our only concern is that our cats are not declawed, but we’ve been back and forth on getting them declawed for about a year now because no matter how much we stay on top of trimming their nails, they scratch our curtains, bedspread, etc. We’ve even tried the kitty claw caps, and one of our cats (the male) hates them so much that he ripped off his own nails to get them off. Our main concern with getting a dog, however, is that one of the cats will claw at the new puppy accidentally out of self-defense or something. This happened to a friend of ours, and her cat actually clawed out the dog’s eye! It was horrible. Does anyone have cats AND dogs and are the cats declawed? I’m also well-aware of the declawing process so you can save your speech about how it’s mutilation. I’m talking purely from a safety perspective here, for both the cats’ and new dog’s sake. Thanks:)
I run a pet rescue from my home, so I have plenty of experience with mixing dogs and cats. I can tell you that in 15 years of rescue, and even longer being a pet owner, I have never had a problem with cats clawing dogs. It has been my experience that clawed cats tend to get along better with dogs. The reason being that they can defend themselves, and it only takes one swat across the nose for a dog to understand his (or her) boundaries when it comes to the cat.
Again, I have never had any serious injuries to dogs because of a cat with claws.
On another note, if you are having trouble with the cats clawing where they shouldn’t, try using a squirt bottle (with water). When they start to scratch where they shouldn’t, squirt them! This should work unless they are Turkish Van cats and enjoy being wet. Also, make sure they have a scratching post so they understand that there is a safe place to scratch at. Rubbing catnip into it really helps.
