Is it a good idea to get my dogs to sleep in the crate instead of a Dog Bed?

I’m a fan of crates. Sooner or later, you are going to need one, and it is great if the dog is already used to it.

When my dog was a pup, she was crated overnight. Now she can sleep on her bed in my room, but she still uses the crate sometimes. When I am out, the petsitters always tell me they found her in her crate. When we travel to other people’s homes, she uses her crate. Her crate is her ‘safe place’ no matter where we may be or she may be.

So I think it’s a good idea to have one, and to have the dog be used to it as it’s safe spot no matter what else is going on. Do I think all dogs need to sleep in one all the time? No. But they do all need to be acclimated to a crate, and sleeping in it is one sure way to get there.

And funnily enough, you will see many dogs who do not have crates recreate one for themselves. They’ll settle in a small protected space anyway in many cases.
