Are there statistics on how owning a dog will help prevent burglaries?

I remember reading about how homes that own dogs are targeted less frequently by burglars than homes with no dogs (that the bark of even a Small Dog will be a deterent for burglars). Does anyone have any references or statistics about this?

A dog can form part of a person security system by virtue of its physical presence in the home acting as a deterrent to burglars who want to make easy money, by targeting only soft options & by acting as a watch dog & barking to alert their owner to check out something unusual in the dog’s environment.

Burglars generally do not want to attract attention to their activities & if a dog is causing havoc by creating a din, a burglar may well look elsewhere.

However, a dog will never be a substitute for a decent alarm system & the ability of the owner to have some method of protecting themselves from bodily harm or death.

A dog’s stomach can be bribed with food {unless it is obedience trained not to take food, unless it is given to them directly by their pack leader} or meat could be poisoned. A burglar who is high on drugs or armed with the intention of using it if the need arose, may still burgle a house with a dog in residence.

The problem with collating reliable statistical information about the effectiveness of a dog as a deterrent is that it would have to be based on reported attempted incidents, which leaves out all the incidents where an attempt was never made because of the dog.
