Dog Advice

Need advice from all the dog lovers out there?

I adopted a Great Pyrenese/ Retriever from Humane society, he is a wonderful puppy. He has made only 2 accidents in the house but he usually will whine when he has to go. He was in a crate when I got him but now he doesnt like to go in the crate. Also I just need general advice , like how often to feed him. I took him to the Vet monday and they say he will be a Big Dog. Does anyone know of this particular breed.

Great Pyrenees are incredible dogs! Congrats. (hope you are prepared for shedding though). Unless you live in a really cold climate (like 9-months of the year cold)—they’ll shed *A LOT*.

As you have experienced, they are also rather smart. (thus the House Training).

***********************
Also, one word of advice…Great Pyrenees are “aloof” animals as they get older. They are not the kind of dog that will come running up to you when you come home and come up and greet you by jumping on you. So, don’t think there’s a problem with the dog simply because of his “aloofness”.

They are also “working dogs”—so make sure your dog gets plenty of “stimulation” (with play or exercise–or he could turn out destroying things out of boredom as he grows older).

*****************

Also, GP are “roamers” by nature (they were originally breed to guard sheep, and LARGE Expanses of Land (in the Pyrenees Mountains—so always be sure you keep them on a leash (or Fenced in Yard) when outside—as they will “roam away”—it’s not that they are being disobedient–it’s simply in their “genetics” to be that way—so never allow them off leash unless in a fenced in yard. (FYI–they are not the type dog prone to “run away” from you when you try to come up to them—-however they are prone to “ignore” you when you call them and go about their way “Herding”—and they are Genetically use to MASSIVE territory they Roam—so, just be careful about “off leash”

*****************

***********************
As a Puppy, feed him 3-times a day (using suggested guide lines on the Dog Bag).

The best food you can give him is the “Dick Van Patten” Natural Balance Selection. (Petco sells it)—FYI–I don’t work for either company—however I do work with Service Animals and Guide Dogs as a trainer, and we use that.

***********************

MOST OF ALL–whatever Dog Food you get, read the label. If the label says on it “Not fit for human consumption” DO NOT BUY IT!! PERIOD! (sorry for the emphasis—but it’s extremely important).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pet_food#Labeling_and_regulation

The “Not Fit for Human consumption” means—The USDA makes providers of all foods label it by “Grade” (so when you buy steak at the Grocery store that’s why you see the “Grade A”–it’s the best).

HOWEVER, Dog Food manufacturer’s are exempt from putting “the good stuff” in the food. So what *SOME* dog food manufactures will do is use all the “throw away pieces” of the Animal from the Slaughter House (that Human Food Providers are not allowed to sell–ie. “not fit for human consumption”—and they’ll use it as dog food….

(read the WikiPedia Article on “Labeling” and/or your favorite Search Engine and Search for it—you’ll be HORRIFIED by what you find the “Not Fit for Human Consumption” is allowed to put into the ingredients

(pretty much anything you can imagine from an animal that a human does not eat).
***********************
You’ll have some Pet Food suppliers argue “but dogs are descendants of Wolves” and their stomachs can handle it.

FALSE!! Dogs have gone through MANY generations of selective breeding. Thus why if it’s not fit for a Human to eat, it’s not fit for a dog to eat–don’t let them snowball you because you can save $10 on a bag of food.

Trust me, under a correct diet, a dog can live 15-20 years (most people would say “impossible”–but I can show you story after story–because a dog was fed the right meal

Besides, when you give a dog “Proper” Balance food—the dog will be better behaved dog, the dog not have a “Dog smell” (nor will he have bad breath)

I’vee been feeding my Dog “top Shelf” brand food since I adopted him at 6-months old.

He still has puppy breath at 3+ years old. (and ZERO dog smell–and he’s not had a bath in months).

***********************
Congrats on your dog! You’vee adopted a WONDERFUL dog. GREAT Breed. A little bit hard to “trick train” (as they are not into that)—but as a lovable “companion” that will always be your Best Friend (despite his aloofness, you can’t ask for much better!!!).

And if he really does have some Terrier in him, he might not be as “aloof” as a typical Great Pyrenees is…..

Good luck wit your new dog and many happy years!!!
