Will it hurt my 85 pound lab if I apply 40% zinc ointment to an area on his belly and above his tail?

Every summer he chews ands chews his self. He does not have fleas and the “hot spot” medicine does not do any good. The medicine the Vet gave me contains mostly alcohol and I had to wash it off my dog after applying it to him because it was burning him. I have diaper rash ointment that works GREAT on my niece but I don’t know if it will hurt my dog. I am sure he will lick it at least a little. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try a mixture of equal parts distilled water, listerine, and mineral oil. Spray on once or twice a day.
