Dental Chew

Can you recommend a good dental chew for my dogs?

I want to get a good chew for my dogs teeth – but I don’t want to end up with something that will upset their sensitive stomachs or their allergies.

I have already read that dry food and carrots are good – I already feed them Taste of the Wild (dry food) and they get a carrot every so often.

I just want something that’s good for their teeth but won’t be bad for their health. I saw something on TV about Dentastix… but it’s made by Pedigree, so I have my doubts about that product.

I’m sorry I didn’t add that I do brush their teeth. I just meant something for them to chew on (when they want to chew on things) that is also good for teeth. They like to chew on things a lot and I would rather it be something I gave them and that is good for them rather than my coffee table.

Greenies are pretty good for keeping tartar down, and dogs love them. There are also other foods and chew treats that work pretty well. But not everything hard will magically clean his teeth. Here’s the list of approved products by the Veterinary Oral Health Council:

Some are only sold through vets, and some are marketed directly through pet stores.

But if he has a sensitive stomach, anything edible could potentially upset it. All you can do is try giving him a product and see if he has a problem with it. And many of the chews, like anything firm dogs can chew on, can lead to an increased risk of cracking a tooth.

Regardless of whether or not you use dental chews or tartar-reducung diets, there is no substitute for daily brushing of his teeth. You can use a pet-safe toothpaste, or even just a moistened soft-bristle toothbrush if the toothpaste bothers his stomach – the brushing works to get most of the tartar off even without paste. If his stomach is really sensitive, this may be the only way to go.
