what type of puppy should i get?

ok my puppy that was 8 months old passed away cuz he was hit by a car and i have been very sad cuz he was the best dog on the planet……..i think it would make me feel better to get a dog, i know it will never replace him though.I want a toy sized dog that is not very expensive ,is good around cats and loves to play with children.
i already went to the shelter none were right for me
and maybe a good watchdog
