What’s the best way to move a dog cross-country?

I’m moving from California to Connecticut and need to get my Boxer, Dublin, over there with me. I’m trying to move August 1. Does anyone have any ideas about how to go about this?

Also, we won’t be driving across the country as I don’t have a car. So it would either have to be ground shipment or air shipment.

Take him in the car with you. Use the A/C when ever you can or keep a window open a bit. If you have to stop to eat, try the drive through and eat outside with your dog. You can also bring food and have a picnic. Stop every few hours to give your dog (and you) a bit of a break.
If you have to stay in a hotel, make sure it is dog friendly. Use a crate or put him in the bathroom if you have to go out and keep the Do Not Disturb sign on the door.
Get a portable fan to use if you ever have to leave the dog in the car for even a short while.
Keep the dogs things like food, water, bowls and clean up stuff easily reachable. Keep a leash with you. Put your cell phone # (if you have one) on the dog tag in case he gets lost. Keep him on leash at all times when you are outside as dogs can get spooked and run off and not know how to get back.
Plan you route and book things like hotels in advance so you know they are dog friendly. Also look for vets and supply stores in case you need something.

I would not recommend flying your dog. Short nosed breeds generally don’t do well on planes. Many airlines do now allow dogs in the cargo during the summer. You would probably have to send him by a cargo plane if you did decide to fly him as pets usually have to have an owner on the plane to fly.
