Colitis In Dogs Treatment

Treating Colitis in Dogs with Flagyl?
My dog was recently diagnosed with Colitis. He also had an infection from it, so they put him on Flagyl(1x a day), Pred(2x a day), & Baytril(2x a day for 2 weeks), then after that he got Flagyl(1x a day), Pred(2x a day), and Doxy(2x a day for 2 weeks). He’s finished with the Doxy now, and he’s just getting Flagyl(1x a day) and Pred(1x a day). The Vet said we have to wean him off the pred, and keep him on Flagyl. I was just wondering if anyone can tell me a little bit more about the Flagyl and it’s use in the treatment of Colitis. From what I know of it it’s an extreme antibiotic, so I don’t know why he should be kept on it. Has anyone been down this road before? Can you just explain how it works to treat the colitis, etc…
Thanks!
smile. I have been battling colitis with my BC for just a year now. She has been on Flagyl since March. We had gotten her to a tab every 3 days, but she would flare with overexcitement as at agility trials. We put her back on a tab a day, I changed food from Canidae Chicken and Rice (they changed their formula) to Nat Balance Duck and Potato (change of protein and carb and has the least of any added ingredients)in July. Have been gradually decreasing Flagyl to 1/2 tab every 3rd day and all is good. Just starting now to every 4 days. I give her NO other food but add canned duck and treats are duck jerky dog treats….just a tiny bit.
warning on Flagyl is rear end weakness and trembling……
good luck…..very scary. There is a yahoo group: IBD dogs that has been most informative….

A Treatment Program for Ulcerative Colitis. $115.71 This works proposes a treatment regiment for ulcerative colitis. Etiologically, ulcerative colitis is caused by a group of defective chromosomes. As a result, patients suffer from severe gastrointestinal related problems. Stress, although once seen as the golden answer, has been refuted; however, science has indicated that stress plays a major role in the onset of colitis relapsesas well as intensity and frequency. Therefore, the program proposed is geared at helping the patient cope with ulcerative colitis, decrease associated anxiety/fear with illness, and stress management/reduction. The modality for this treatment follows core cognitivebehavioral concepts and techniques. For decades, this model has been shown to be effective in achieving desirable effects in this field. This treatment was created for gastroenterologists who seek to better their patients quality of life.
