Can someone explain to me the Click method of training my German?
I started doggy school yesterday with my German Shepard. I was given a clicker to click right before saying Good Boy. So obviously it is a positive reinforcement, BUT why? I don’t understand it!?

First understand what the clicker is for. Dogs, as much as we love them aren’t very smart. If you were to say HEY Rex or if you were to say STAY Rex, they have a difficult time understanding the difference. A clicker is a unique sound that is every easy to differentiate from your voice. As one person mentioned, it is used in training as a marker. A way of immediately communicating to your animal that they are doing exactly what you want her to do.
It is imperitave to “load” the clicker prior to trying to train with it. To do so, you simply click and then treat, click and treat. You will need to do this a multitude of times and it varies with each dog. Sometimes it takes as few as 10 clicks to load the clicker. With my Wheaten it took closer to around 40 to 50 and over the course of sevral days. How can you tell if the clicker is loaded? Well, if they get excited when you pull that clicker out, that’s one way to tell. If I pull that clicker out and put it around my neck, my dog will follow me through hell now because she knows that good things are coming her way.
The first rule of using a clicker for training is that you always protect the integrity of a loaded clicker… which means that if you click… even if it’s by accident, then you must treat the dog immediately.
The clicker is not used as a calling device or as a way of communicating commands or any way with your animal outside of using it to mark desired behavior. You are not teaching your dog to come on one click, sit on two clicks and jump through a ring of fire on 3 clicks. You use it at the exact moment your dog exhibits the behavior you are training.
If you are potty training, click and treat immediately after they do their business (not during because you may interrupt the process.) If you are teaching to sit, use the appropriate hand signal and the minute his rear hits the ground, click then treat. Same with lying down and additional behaviors. Later in training, the command will stick and they will know that they are doing the right thing when you say “sit” and you will no longer need the clicker. Though my trainer still continues to teach new behaviors with a clicker to her 4 year old German Shepherd.
