treats vs. praise opinions?

One trainer told me you must give a treat after every click. A lot of dog owners I meet though say they never use treats and they just use praise, no matter what they’re training. I feel like we are a little less or something because I use a lot of treats when I train. I do just use praise when it’s a cue they know well and not hard, like “sit”

What do you guys think about treats vs. praise?

I think it’s a misunderstanding of positive reinforcement.

Positive reinforcement means reinforcing desired behavior with whatever motivates YOUR dog. It might be treats, it might be affection, it might be a good brief play with a favorite toy. You use what motivates YOUR dog the best.

If you are using treats, you want to phase them out as soon as the dog is performing consistently and replace with praise. Treats are used to ESTABLISH a behavior more than to maintain it. If the dog is responding consistently and you are still treating every time, you have used the treats too long. Go from always a treat to randomly treating for desired behavior to never treating.

The clicker itself becomes a reinforcement in clicker training. The dog has a positive emotional reaction to the click sound itself, even if it is not always followed by a secondary reinforcer, btw.
