Chew Bone
my birds wont chew on their cuddle bone?
I have 2 parakeets 1 female 1 male neither of them will chew on the cuddle bone. why not? how can i get them to chew on it so it can trim there beaks-which the male really needs done right now
They will eat the ‘cuttle bone’ when they need the calcium. The ‘cuttle bone’ isn’t in there for them to trim their beak on.
If you want something for your bird to trim his beak use a toy that has a piece of lava rock on it. Remove all other toys so they have no choice but
to play with the lava stone toy. If you would have given him something to chew on then his beak wouldn’t have gotten over grown.
You will need to trim the beak and then install the new chew toy. Hold the bird in your hand. Place your thumb on one side of his head and your forefinger on the other side of his head. Only grasp your fingers around his body enough to keep the bird from squirming and flapping his wings while you take an Emery board and file his beak down.
Remember, the Cuttle Bone is for calcium and needs to be in the cage so the bird will have access to it when they want it. Hardwood chew toys and toys with lava rock incorporated to it is great for them. They will keep their toe nails and beak trimmed by chewing and hanging on it. Good luck with your keets!
