Cheap Pet Medication

My Vet gives me a hard time when I want a prescription instead of purchasing them from her office?

I am thinking about switching vets. She seems to be a little on the greedy side.
When she sees my pets, and if needed, she will tell me that she is going to give them medication to treat whatever illness my pet has. Well I have found out that the medications she is giving them are outrageously priced. I asked her the other day to write me a prescription so I can fill it out at PET MEDS since they were 15 dollars cheaper there. She threw a fit telling me the meds she gives them are better and of better quality. 1800pedmeds seem to be having the same EXACT ingredients in the same medication my vet gives my animals.
Does my vet have a right to refuse to give me a prescription? Do I HAVE to accept that the medication given to my pets be taken at the office?
These are not medicines my pets need URGENTLY. They can wait a day or two.

I think you might be wise to look into a new vet. And no, you do not have to accept the medication; you have a right to choose the ‘pharmacy’ of your choice.

I am on the other side of the coin — I call the vet, and he calls the prescription in to Petmeds for me (most of the time taking my word for what I want/need because he knows I know cats), or gives me a verifiable prescription number. I suspect this is the type of vet who insists you have to buy Hills S/D (so she can make the 60-70% profit on it).

PETMEDS (and there are others that are actually a little cheaper) is a certified pet pharmacy, so there is no worry about the quality of the meds. And here’s a hint…when I do get tab meds from the vet (like amox or clav) I always get an extra pack (you know how cats spit them out…) that way I have some on hand when I need them. You get to know what meds work for what and when to dose (and thanks to the internet, can always look the info up).

I live in a rural area, and most vets only have office hours two days a week, so they are a little more relaxed about things, and even the local pharmacies carry the basic meds animals need.

Talk to a few cat-owner friends and ask them how they feel about their vet, as that is the best way to choose a new one.
