Cat grooming, how to choose a groomer?

My manx is long haired and his hair grows quickly. I had an appointment with groomer just to clip the hair, no bathing or anything like that. I actually help with the grooming. However, my groomer was out and the owner was filling in. The morning of our appointment I had to cancel because I could not get my cat into the carrier. It has been a while since he rode in the carrier and I am remembering I have to coax him into it since I can not force him into it. I called the groomer and I asked to come in the following weekend. His reply was ‘do you want to just wait when you know for sure when you want to come in?’ I did not like his attitude but at same time my guy needs a clipper cut. What would you do? Would you go back or find another groomer?
Since I missed our appointment I have been using scissors to gently & extremely carefully cut small amounts of hair each day. Maybe that is the way to go since he will not let me brush him.

I don’t think the owner was *too* cranky; weekends tend to be busy for groomers, and if an appointment had been blocked out for you, perhaps it was too late to get another fill-in.

That being said, there are not a lot of groomers out there that ‘fit’ as cat groomers (I know; I used to work at a groomers and I was one of the few that could handle cats); if you feel right about your cat’s groomer, just chalk this episode as a learning experience.

Also, if your manx has a thick enough coat that warrants clipping, either check to see if the groomer can do a housecall – to prevent you from having your cat associate the carrier with a BATH – or see if you can be taught to do a simple clip yourself. There are some small home-grooming clippers that are fairly quiet, and while it will not take the place of a professional grooming, your cat would be comfortable.
