How can I desensitise my dog to the cage?

Hi
He is a German Shepherd x collie and a wonderful boy. He needs to travel in my car in a cage made to fit the boot. I dont have an option to this due to my work. However, he is very nervous being shut in it, I think he associates it with the vets (he had an operation and woke up in pain in a cage at the vets). Please could you give me advice how to help him with this?

• If your car’s boot is the luggage compartment, and you shut the boot-lid with your pet in there, you are not fit to be a dog owner. Would you put you child or sister in there and drive around so that the boot space fills with toxic fumes. and the occupant can’t even see what’s going on???
• If your car’s boot is the luggage compartment, and you leave the boot-lid right up so you pet can get light and air, you are not fit to be a driver – the lid blocks your vision of what is directly behind your vehicle.

If the vehicle is your employer’s, then you need to pay for a customised “grille” that will raise the boot-lid enough for your pet to see out of and get air via, but that “grille” is locked immovably between the 2 parts of the boot’s normal locking mechanism. A disadvantage is that rain & snow can get in while the vehicle is parked, or stopped at traffic lights. Nor can you or your pooch adequately control the temperature in there.
Alternatively, you buy a special dog trailer to tow behind the firm’s car .

If the car is your own, then you change to a SUITABLE vehicle. Back in the early 1970′s I built 2 kennels, a double bed, and a kitchen into a Ford Transit van. But for most 1-dog people a van is too big.
· The ideal vehicle for a 1-or-2 dog family is a ute (what Yanks call a well-side pick-up truck) such as the Ford Courier or Toyota Hi-Lux. You fit a commercial fibre-glass canopy on to it, with windows and ventilation. and either pad the deck for the dog to ride loose on, or fit ring bolts to one side to clip its travelling crate to. Among its many advantages is that you can hose the deck out if the pooch messes or vomits in there. There are 3 versions – the standard 2 door one-bench seat ute that gives maximum deck-space; the 2 door bucket-seats in front & child-sized bench seat behind; and the 4 door cab that is convenient for families with teens or multiple adults.
· A tradesman’s panel-van or an estate-car/ranch-wagon are very similar, but have the disadvantage that smells from your dog permeate your breathing space – not a problem with most dogs, but a big problem with some. And until you fit one, there is no barrier to keep your pooch in the rear, where it can’t interfere with the driver or passengers. And you can’t hose-out an estate-car/ranch-wagon.

So far as just the CRATE is concerned, you make it familiar & rewarding – keep it in the house, and place his meals in there. Sometimes show him that you are tossing a tidbit in there for him. But always leaving it open so that he can come & go, except when he has to travel in it.
But the current problem will be the unhappy RIDE when the crate is in the boot of your car. (Have you noticed that people who get car-sick when in the back seat almost never do when in the front seat? The boot of the vehicle is even further back than the rear seats.)
