Does anyone here knit cable and write their own patterns?

I’m just learning cable. I have a stocking stitch pattern I want to change to a cable pattern. Do I add extra stitches for the cable stitches or not?
For example if my plain pattern is 50 stitches do I need to add 2 stitches for every cable?

Cable pulls the knitting in in the same way as rib so yes you do need to add extra stitches to your stocking stitch pattern.
How many stitches depends on how thick the yarn is and how many stitches you are cabling across.
Your pattern will give you instructions on how to test your gauge. Follow the instructions but working your cable in the middle. You will then be able to measure how much narrower the cable makes the piece. You can then calculate how many extra stitches to cast on.
