Hello Caz,

This is a very important question, especially for lover’s of the Boxer breed. Boxer’s are one of many breeds that love attention and love their people! They are also a breed that love’s to jump up because they are so smart and they learn so quickly!

Doesn’t make since to you? Well, your Boxer pup is just responding to what she’s been conditioned and taught to respond to doing. Has there ever been a time when you were so worried, focused, or in a rush that you weren’t able to greet her right away? What did she do? As soon as she realized you had your mind on other things, she calmed down because she wasn’t getting the attention response that told her it was ok to jump up on you. **If you have children this works on them too. If they are having a temper tantrum and you ignore it, they will eventually figure out it has no effect on you and they will stop. Get the idea?

When we go somewhere we often feel guilty about leaving our dogs, our “babies,” or when we return we are so happy to see them that we make a big fuss over them as soon as we walk in the door. (A “fuss” can be as simple as saying their name, looking at them and smiling, or reaching down to give them a pat on the head.) This is the BIGGEST mistake that we can make with a Boxer because they are so smart they remember what they’ve been taught.

A lot of the time the first thing we do when we walk in the door is say, “Hi Fido!” and we start giving the dog affection and attention. Affection and attention usually consists of petting or play behavior but, it can also consist of looking at them, talking to them and/or petting them. Whatever their reaction to this stimulus is; jumping up, running around in circles, or just wagging their tail, they have this reaction because that’s what they’ve gotten praise for in the past. And that reaction can cause problems in the future, like jumping up on people when they aren’t wanted or invited.

So, now your Boxer’s learned that the way to greet “people” is to get excited, jump up, and/or play. Aren’t they smart? LOL
Well, what do you do now? You teach your Boxer to “unlearn” the behavior. You stop giving the response they are used to getting, which is a “play” state, and instead give them no response until they are in a calm-submissive state.

Teaching a dog not to jump can take some time, especially if there are many family members and friends that have to be taught to “re-train” your Boxer. This retraining does not need to consist of touching, hitting or kicking the dog. It simply needs to consist of NOTHING. Yes, that’s right, nothing! It is now your mission in life to give your dog attention only on YOUR terms.

Any time you are coming in to the home (friends and family too) you are not allowed to Look at, Talk to or Pay Attention to your Boxer. If they attempt to jump up or make any contact with you, you are simply to turn AWAY from them. You turn your back to them and walk away.

I know, you’re thinking, “Not my dog, she’ll never give up!” If you do it consistently enough, she WILL stop. Or, “What if she keeps jumping on my back?” Well, shrug her off and MOVE forward or turn while moving further away. Turn in a different direction each time with your back to her, and walk away.

Eventually your Boxer will get bored because she is not getting any attention. Guess what she’ll do? Probably walk away, go lay down, or go to someone else that will give her attention. As long as she is excited, or interested in you (or anyone else that just walked in the door,) it is your responsibility and imperative that you DO NOTHING, pay NO attention to her. No talking, No touching, No eye contact.

After a few minutes when things have settled down and the groceries are all put away, or you’ve started supper or sat down to watch T.V., THAT is the time to give her love, attention and affection.

Boxer’s LOVE their people. When they learn that they get attention and affection only when they are quiet and still…guess what? They will be quiet and still.

She should have NOTHING to gain from paying attention (jumping up) to you.
