How can I tell if a mixed breed puppy will grow up to be a big dog or a Small Dog?

A co-worker wants to get a dog and I suggested adopting a dog from a shelter. She has kids and would like a small/medium sized dog. Besides big paws, what things should she be looking for so she can choose a dog that wont grow too much?
Her kids are big kids. 12, 15 and 18.

Typically, shelter dogs have a cage card which tells the approximate age and breed of the dog. If the dog is full grown and not a puppy, its size is probably not going to increase much.

Also, any mixed breed which consists of a larger breed dog may turn out to be on the larger side also. For example, a Lab Mix may weigh as much as 75 pounds, or as little as 50, depending on what it was mixed with.

I would also suggest a short quiz to see what kind of dog is the best for her family. For example, Labs are wonderful with children but if she wants something smaller, like a border collie, these breeds need LOTS of exercise and plenty of room to run.
