Is it ok to ‘oven dry/bake’ pine pet bedding to help ‘kill off’ the the pine oils and other things in it?

I found a website that says pine bedding is ok for guinea pigs, but sometimes it has oils on it that could be bad. The bedding my mom recently got for our ferret is ‘big’ pine shavings, which are bad for them, but apparenly good for guinea pigs.

Yes, the natural oils from pine, and especially cedar shavings, is an irritant to small animals, but I do NOT recommend baking them in the oven . You can buy kiln dried pine shavings. Even better, you can buy “pellets” of pine that have no oils. they are just kiln dried pine sawdust compressed into a pellet shape-they are very absorbent, and swell when wet. Much better than shavings, and the best thing I have found for rabbit cages (assuming they have a wire bottom, and aren’t sitting in the litter). If your pet store doesn’t have that, they should have have a littler made from recycled paper-this is almost as good.
