Do electronic/ Ultrasonic Dog barking deterent units really work?

I don’t personally have experience with these devices, but from what I’ve read, they are not very reliable. Not only do they not work well, but some might also say they are a cruel way to try to correct your dog.

Dogs will always bark, you can’t stop them completely. The best way to control them is to have them well-trained. Don’t go crazy when your dog is barking, because it will learn that barking gets attention and a reaction. Just ignore him. This helps to keep barking at a minimum. Sometimes simply paying attention to what the dog is barking at helps. Don’t have a large response, just get up, look at what the dog is barking at, and go back to what you were doing. The calmer you stay, the calmer your dog will stay. This gives the dog credit for whatever they’ve noticed, but doesn’t praise them for extended barking. They got your attention, job done. Also, since they are looking to you for guidance, they will see that you saw whatever the dog is concerned about and did not see any reason for further action, so things must be OK. Then the dog will feel comfortable and move on.
Take time to train your dog. When a dog is barking, correct him, but don’t go overboard. Then find something to distract him from the barking, and as soon as he stops, start praising him a great deal.
Some people also suggest that if you train your dog to “speak” (bark on command), it is easier to train the counter-command to stop barking.
