How Do I Trace Where My Pet Cockatiel Came From With Their Leg Band?

I have recently purchased a cockatiel and it is really bugging me what the sex is because i am having a hard time naming them. Can i use the code on their leg band to trace their sex and date of birth?? And if so how would i go about finding the breeder with the code?

If you want to know the sex of your bird, you won’t find the answer on the band, or with the breeder.

Bands usually have the hatch year (not day), State abbreviation, Breeder or aviary initials, and a number. That last number is only relevent to the breeder…it’s an inventory number.

In the US, the only bands that are easilty traceable would probably be registered to the one of the following organizations:

If your bird is an adult, you should be able to determine the sex visually.

All adult female and juvenile cockatiels (except pieds), have tail feather barring/banding. These are horizontal stripes that go across the underside of the longest tail feathers. Most females also have wing spots, which are a line of small (pea-size) dots along one edge of their flight feathers.

There are other markings, but they differ depending on the mutation.
